About This Park

The Atnarko/Highway 20 corridor of Tweedsmuir Provincial Park is an area of excellent bear habitat and healthy populations of both grizzly and black bears. The Belarko viewing platform is open from September 1st until September 30th with daily openings starting 7am until 7pm.

The Bella Coola Valley and adjoining Tweedsmuir Park are home to a large population of grizzly and black bears and bear watching has become a popular activity here.

The animals actively roam over a wide area late in the day and throughout the night and to the casual visitor can occasionally be hard to spot. Some, but not all bears tend to follow the ripening fruit and vegetation up into the surrounding hillsides during spring and summer, and then return to the valley floor in late August to feast on the spawning salmon.

Additional Information

In talking with Parks staff, they are strongly considering creating an alternate route (possibly a ramp) to improve access to the viewing platform. Plans are also in the works to improve access to the boat launch.
Access route has been constructed in the past two years. While the distance is short and the surface is good, the grade is still steep. An alternate route that will provide a gentler slope is being considered by park staff.
